The consultation was held from 6 to 10 September 1995 in the Protestant conference centre on the Liebfrauenberg (near Strasbourg), which had already frequently proved a fruitful venue for such ecumenical encounters. The invitations were issued by the Leuenberg Church Fellowship.

Hitherto, the Leuenberger Texte have always appeared bilingually, but that is not possible on this occasion, for reasons of space. The fruit of the Consultation – its Report – appears in German as well as in the original English. This Report, approved by the meeting, describes the process which led up to it and the themes which require further examination.

Because of the fundamental importance of the lecture by André Birmelé, which was given in German, we have printed this text too in both German and English. The other papers all appear in the language in which they were delivered at the Consultation – with one exception: The contribution about the Leuenberg Agreement, its origins and content, was given in German but is printed in English; this seems sensible, because while the Leuenberg Agreement is well known among Continental churches and theologians, it is less well known in Great Britain. The brief aides mémoires are intended to enable readers to enter a little into the discussions of the papers and statements during the Consultation.

The present book documents the papers and communiqué of a consultation between the Conference of European Churches (CEC) and the Leuenberg Church Fellowship (LCF) held at the Orthodox Academy Chania in Crete from 28 November to 1 December 2002. The editors also wrote a report (see the appendix) on the process of the consultation in which prayer services and theological talks effectively complemented each other.

The idea of convening such a consultation between the representatives of Protestant, Orthodox and Old Oriental churches in Europe came in equal measure from the Conference of European Churches and the Leuenberg Church Fellowship. The question of ecclesiology seemed to be particularly suitable as the subject of talks due to the fact that the Leuenberg Church Fellowship unanimously adopted a study document entitled "The Church of Jesus Christ. The Contribution of the Reformation towards Ecumenical Dialogue on Church Unity." The document's subtitle demonstrates that its intention goes far beyond the self understanding of the Reformation churches on their own understanding of the church. The Leuenberg Agreement itself emphasises that the churches involved should do so "as part of their responsibility to promote the ecumenical fellowship of all Christian churches." For this reason, the Agreement and the ensuing study document on the church are targeted on the dialogue with other Christian churches, especially the Roman Catholic Church and the Orthodox churches. Conversely, the document is of special interest for Orthodox theologians, too, for being a consensus paper representing a common understanding of the Lutheran, Reformed and United churches in Europe on the Church of Jesus Christ.

Thanks to efficient coordination between the CEC and LCF secretariats, the papers of the consultation, communiqué and report could be compiled in a relatively short time and made available in German and English with a view to bringing the publication to a broader readership. The present book documents the final communiqué and some papers of this dialogue. The introduction to the final communiqué gives more detailed information on its background and process. After the final Report which had been adopted unanimously by the both delegations was received by the CPCE Executive Committee and the EBF Council, it was forwarded to the CPCE member churches and the EBF member unions. It is expected to be studied at first at national and regional levels. In various countries, e.g. in Britain, France and Italy, the document has become object of new or ongoing dialogues between Baptists and CPCE churches. It is our hope that it will promote and intensify in manifold ways the cooperation between our communities. A possible resumption of the dialogue proposed to be held after the CPCE General Assembly in autumn 2006 would certainly lead to a further intensification of fellowship.

In order that the document might be studied across Europe, we are presenting it to the public in this bilingual publication. It has been published only at the websites of the two organisations up to now. The German version, albeit without the introduction, was printed in the Ökumenische Rundschau 2004, pp. 387-397. The initial reception in ecumenical and theological circles was very encouraging. Most of all, the common statements on baptism, which in some respects go beyond the scope of existing convergences and may open a way to the overcoming of the controversies, have met with keen interest.

The first consultation between the Conference of European Churches (CEC) and the Community of Protestant Churches in Europe (CPCE) took place in the Orthodox Academy, Chania, Crete from 28 November to 1 December 2002. Representatives of Orthodox and Old Oriental churches and of Lutheran, Reformed and United churches discussed questions of Reformation ecclesiology which arose from the ecumenical conversation between Orthodox and Reformation churches on the basis of the study The Church of Jesus Christ,1 which was approved by the General Assembly of the Leuenberg Church Fellowship in 1994. The texts of this consultation were published in 2004. The consultation in Chania formed the starting point for further conversations. There followed the consultation in the Leucorea study centre in Lutherstadt Wittenberg (25 – 27 June 2004) and the consultation in the Phanar in Istanbul (27 - 30 April 2006), at which there was a meeting with the Ecumenical Patriarch His All Holiness Bartholomew I, who strongly supported the process of consultation.

This volume documents and presents to the public the lectures given and declarations made at the second consultation in Wittenberg and at the third consultation in the Phanar. In it the editors want to communicate to their member churches and ecumenical partners the course of the consultation progress which began in Crete and stimulate them to similar conversations. Ecumenism lives by the will for shared concentrated theological work, by openness to the questions of the other and a spirit of being brothers and sisters in a faith which transcends boundaries. The participants in the consultations have been able to experience this time and again during their conversations. Both traditions agree on the substance of Baptism. The rich diversity of liturgical forms is not church-dividing; it can mean enrichment.
