Besides the issues of ministry and ordination (cf. Leuenberger Texte 2) it concerned the issue of the doctrines of the ‘Two Kingdoms’ and the ‘Lordship of Jesus Christ’. Two regional groups delegated for that purpose worked on the issue from 1978 till 1986. In the present volume the outcomes of this theological work are documented as well as further texts on the decision-making in ethical questions such as questions about Christian testimony in the contemporary world and the responsibility for peace in the present time which were dealt with in different regional groups. With this volume we continue our bilingual series (German\/English) which in the meantime has proved its worth for the LCF texts.\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003eThe core question of all the texts contained in this volume is that of ethical action in the world. Proceeding from the reflection on the sustainability of the Reformation models, which find confessional emphases in the ‘Two-Kingdom’ and ‘Christ’s Lordship’ doctrines, but nevertheless do not constitute any ‘doctrinal models specific to confessions, still less church-dividing’, it becomes clear that we do have a basic theological consensus as regards Protestant responsibility in the world. The two conceptions are on mutually censoring and complementing terms. Both are guided, however, by the comprehension that the God revealed in Jesus Christ is the Lord of every single domain of the world and secular life. The doctrine of the ‘Two Kingdoms’ checks the theocratic misunderstanding of the doctrine of the ‘Lordship of Christ’, while the latter raises the critical question of the former letting Christ’s life split into two domains which have their own laws, thus leading them to a double morality.\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003eIn this connection, I would like to draw the attention of the readers to the theological discussions which were carried out by a joint study group of the United and Lutheran churches in the former GDR and resulted in a very similar outcome. It was published in 1980 under the title of ‘Kirchengemeinschaft und politische Ethik. Ergebnis eines theologischen Gesprächs zum Verhältnis von Zwei-Reiche- Lehre und der Lehre von der Königsherschaft Christi’. The texts of the present volume specify the complementing character of the two doctrines with regard to the questions of ethical decision-making as raised by, for example, the discussions about peace in the eighties. This compilation of texts concludes with the proposal, presented by the Federation of the Evangelical Churches in the former GDR at the beginning of 1989, for an up-to-date interpretation of CA 16 about the question of ‘just’ war and the evaluation of the reactions from the churches participating in the Leuenberg Church Fellowship. This bilingual series hopes to make these documents available internationally for work in parishes, house groups, synods, ecumenical talks, academies or theological seminars.\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003eEarlier documents in the series covered ecclesiology (Vol. 1), the sacraments, ministry and ordination (Vol. 2), criteria of ethical decision making (Vol. 3) and the question of church fellowship between the churches of the Leuenberg Agreement and those covered by the Meissen and Porvoo Declarations (Vol. 4). The documents in Volume 5 on “The Christian Witness to Freedom” contain the results of conversations conducted during the profound political changes in Eastern and Western Europe from 1989 onwards, which had more effect than usual on theological consultations. Only a small majority voted in favour of the issue at the 3rd Assembly of the Leuenberg Church Fellowship in Strasbourg in March 1987. The delegates did not know what political changes Europe was to undergo from 1989 onwards, nor how important the question of “freedom” would become.\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003eThe two studies on “freedom”, by a project group established in the autumn of 1989 and, from 1992, also by the “Southern\/Eastern Europe Regional Group” led by Bishop J. Hanselmann, became a living account of European history. The resulting documents do not claim to offer a consensus; they deliberately reflect different emphases and specific experiences of “freedom”. The first version of the project group's report was submitted in French – probably a unique event in the Leuenberg doctrinal conversations. The spirit and verve of the French tradition of freedom can be sensed as one studies the document. The Southern\/Eastern Europe Regional Group (“South Europe” till the General Assembly in 1994), on the other hand, concentrates more on the freedom and captivity of the church. This reflects experiences of socialism and communism among the churches of Eastern Europe over the past 40 years.\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003eThe Executive Committee submitted both documents with its comments to the 4th General Assembly. They were received with gratitude and the resolution adopted that both studies be made available with guides for congregational use, so that the best possible advantage could be taken of them. The delegates of that Assembly were faced with three matters of concern. Firstly, the ecclesiological statements of the document “The Church of Jesus Christ” (cf. Leuenberg Document 1) adopted unanimously by the Vienna Assembly required further concretising. It seemed particularly urgent to work up the tasks of the churches in the pluralistic societies in Europe (The Church of Jesus Christ, Chapter II). Secondly, the post-1989 political changes, especially in the eastern and central European regions under the former Soviet Union’s influence, gave rise to a new national awareness which partly led to homicidal nationalistic conflicts (the collapse of Yugoslavia). Thirdly, the Leuenberg Church Fellowship was expected to provide a special contribution for the Second European Ecumenical Assembly 1997 (EEA2) in Graz. The South and Southeast Europe Regional Group attended to this task producing a thesis on the subject of “Church, people, state and nation”.\u003c\/span\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eGiven the dramatic situation of the Protestant churches in central, eastern and south-eastern Europe, it stood to reason that the South and Southeast Regional Group of the Leuenberg Church Fellowship was commissioned to deal with the subject. The Group worked intensively on the relationship of “Church– People–State–Nation” in the years between 1995 and 1998. The introduction of the study itself gives information on the working process (v. p. 106ff). The first draft, which was produced in 1998 after providing the thesis for the EEA2, was sent to the member churches of the Leuenberg Church Fellowship for reactions. The question of ecclesiology seemed to be particularly suitable as the subject of talks due to the fact that the Leuenberg Church Fellowship unanimously adopted a study document entitled \"The Church of Jesus Christ. The Contribution of the Reformation towards Ecumenical Dialogue on Church Unity.\" The document's subtitle demonstrates that its intention goes far beyond the self understanding of the Reformation churches on their own understanding of the church. The Leuenberg Agreement itself emphasises that the churches involved should do so \"as part of their responsibility to promote the ecumenical fellowship of all Christian churches.\" For this reason, the Agreement and the ensuing study document on the church are targeted on the dialogue with other Christian churches, especially the Roman Catholic Church and the Orthodox churches. Conversely, the document is of special interest for Orthodox theologians, too, for being a consensus paper representing a common understanding of the Lutheran, Reformed and United churches in Europe on the Church of Jesus Christ.\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003eThanks to efficient coordination between the CEC and LCF secretariats, the papers of the consultation, communiqué and report could be compiled in a relatively short time and made available in German and English with a view to bringing the publication to a broader readership. After the final Report which had been adopted unanimously by the both delegations was received by the CPCE Executive Committee and the EBF Council, it was forwarded to the CPCE member churches and the EBF member unions. It is expected to be studied at first at national and regional levels. In various countries, e.g. in Britain, France and Italy, the docu­ment has become object of new or ongoing dialogues between Baptists and CPCE churches. It is our hope that it will promote and intensify in manifold ways the cooperation between our communities. A possible resumption of the dialogue proposed to be held after the CPCE General Assembly in autumn 2006 would certainly lead to a further intensification of fellowship.\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003eIn order that the document might be studied across Europe, we are presenting it to the public in this bilingual publication. There followed the consultation in the Leucorea study centre in Lutherstadt Wittenberg (25 – 27 June 2004) and the consultation in the Phanar in Istanbul (27 - 30 April 2006), at which there was a meeting with the Ecumenical Patriarch His All Holiness Bartholomew I, who strongly supported the process of consultation.\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003eThis volume documents and presents to the public the lectures given and declarations made at the second consultation in Wittenberg and at the third consultation in the Phanar. In it the editors want to communicate to their member churches and ecumenical partners the course of the consultation progress which began in Crete and stimulate them to similar conversations. Ecumenism lives by the will for shared concentrated theological work, by openness to the questions of the other and a spirit of being brothers and sisters in a faith which transcends boundaries. The participants in the consultations have been able to experience this time and again during their conversations.
